Surprised fac by Syahirun Bin Sophan

This artwork is done via print making technique. Syahirun traces the picture of a person’s face – which was printed on A3 sized paper and laminated to provide a smooth surface for paints during the printmaking process. He uses a brush that has been dipped in tempera paint to trace. Next, Syahirun takes a blank paper and places it on top of the traced picture to create a print.

The final product is a character that looks like a man who’s wearing a gas mask. Syahirun, however, shares that the artwork depicts a surprised face. He chose to use two colours – orange and black. Orange is used to paint the face and upper body of his character, and black is used to delineate the character’s hair, spectacles, ears and mouth that is hanging open. Syahirun’s choice of colours and techniques draws viewers’ attention to the character’s distinctive expression.
